Things No One Tells You About Kheerganga Trek & Camping!

Kheerganga trek

Himachal Pradesh is one of the best trekking destinations in India. Amongst all the treks here, the Kheerganga trek is the most popular one. It attracts adventure lovers and nature enthusiasts from all over the world. The trek is thrilling, but it is not always about taking mesmerizing photos for the gram.

The travel blogs that talk about only the beauty of the trek are keeping away a few things! Yes, here is a reality dose—everything you should know about before embarking on this thrilling adventure.

More About the Kheerganga Trek

Kheerganga Peak is situated in the midst of Parvati Valley in Kasol town, Kullu, Himachal Pradesh. It is perched at a height of approximately 2950 meters, ideal for amateur trekkers looking for a chill yet thrilling trek.

The trek is surrounded by snow-capped mountains (summers are snowy too!) with humongous pine trees. The beauty looks almost magical, and the peak of Kheerganga is surrounded by lots of mythological myths.

For instance, people believe that it is the place where Lord Kartikeya, the son of Parvati and Shiva, meditated. When Goddess Parvati came here to take him away, she made a kheer for him using rice & milk. There is also a hot spring here, known for curing any ailments, while at the same time, science shows us that it is a dormant volcano, and thus, it is a hot spring.

Things to know about the Kheerganga Trek

The trek is not as easy as everyone makes it

Sure, it is a beginner-friendly trek, but it is 100% not as easy as many blogs say. No, you do not require any technical mountaineering skills. But there is a 12-14 km uphill climb, and that is undoubtedly challenging, especially if you have never been trekking. The trail is steep in some sections; in monsoon season, it is slippery, and if you do not have the physical stamina, you will be exhausted beyond your imagination. So do not skimp on those cardio workouts to prepare!

The weather here is unpredictable

Kheerganga has unpredictable weather! One minute, you will see the sun, and the next minute, you will see unexpected rain. The weather here changes rapidly, especially during the winter and monsoon season.

If you go here to trek between October and March, you will experience the occasional snowfall and cold. So, it is best to be prepared with extra layers and even carry a waterproof jacket, irrespective of the season.

There is not one but Multiple Routes

If you think there is only one trail heading towards Kheerganga, you are wrong! There are three different routes.

  • The first, most popular, and easiest route is the Nakhan route. Since it has a well-defined path, trekking through it is easy.
  • The second route is the Kalga route. It is less crowded & scenic, but it is a bit confusing because it has dense forest trails.
  • Tosh Route: It is a challenging and longer route, and it is perfect for anyone who is looking for an offbeat experience.

You will not find a Network there

If you are thinking of checking work emails or putting IG stories while on the trek to Kheerganga Peak, forget it. The mobile network is almost nonexistent after Barshaini. And once you reach Kheerganga, you will be off-grid. If you are looking for a digital detox, this is ideal for you. But you must inform your family in advance.

A hot spring experience is not always the best

The natural hot water spring is one of the biggest attractions here! It is a blissful experience, but it is not always magical. Sometimes, it can get super-crowded (read: peak season)! Also, sharing a pool with so many people is not relaxing or hygienic. But if you really want to take a dip in this magical pool, head here early in the morning before the crowd comes.

The toilets are very basic

Kheerganga has limited and basic toilet facilities. You will have to share them. Your guides, if you book from a reputable travel company, will help you find the best toilets. However, it is best to carry wet wipes, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer.

The animals can find their way in

If you plan to camp in Kheerganga, make sure you do so with trustworthy guides. Before, it was home to multiple animals like the Himalayan black bear. Usually, they do not come to the campsite, but it is better to be careful. Also, stray dogs will come, and it is best not to feed them, as recommended by the locals.

Limited food options

If you do not book your trek with a proper travel agent, you will find it challenging to find good food. The food there is pricey with limited options. So, always book your trek to Kheerganga with a known and verified travel agent.

Final Verdict

Kheerganga is one of the most beautiful and mesmerizing treks to head to in India. It offers stunning views with a sense of adventure, giving you a break from the digital world. Yet, to ensure you have the best time here, you should pack wisely, avoid the monsoon season, and enjoy every moment. Soak up the experience of being in the shadows of the gigantic Himalayas. This is truly an adventure of a lifetime.
